Latinx/e and Hispanic Research and Cultural Production at WSU

September 26 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm PDT

Hispanic Heritage Month provides a time to celebrate and honor the research contributions of the Latinx community. Join the Office of Research along with a panel of faculty in an open discussion on the research happening at WSU. Each panel member will present a 5 minute flash talk with a Q&A period to follow.

The panel includes:

  • Robert Bauman, Professor in the History Department (Tri-Cities). Research interest: The Tri-Cities Latinx Community Oral History Project uses oral histories to explore the experiences of Latinx/Hispanic migrants to and residents of the Tri-Cities area. Those oral histories document the history of Latinx people in the region and focus on issues like migration, labor, education, culture, family and impacts of COVID-19 on the Latinx/Hispanic population. To date, we have conducted 15 oral histories. Both the videos and the transcripts of those oral histories will be available on the Hanford History Project website.
  • Vilma C. Navarro Daniels, Professor and Interim Director of the School of Language, Culture, and Race (Pullman). Current research: Canto Nuevo (New Song)—a Chilean musical genre characterized for its popular roots and its commitment to social change and social justice—as a utopian counter-discourse to the official narratives about national identity created during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. Her research approaches this artistic expression from a variety of perspectives: literary, cultural, social, and political.
  • Luz Maria Gordillo (she/her), CAHNRS Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence and Professor of History (Pullman/Vancouver). Research interests are The History of Medicine and Science: Women and Eugenics.
  • Cesar Haas, Assistant Professor in the School of Music (Pullman). Interest are research, performance, composition, and teaching of music that combines contemporary jazz techniques with Brazilian rhythms.

Join us via Zoom on September 26th from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm. RSVP on-line to attend.
