Fundamentals of Grant Writing Across Disciplines

The Fundamentals of Grant Writing Across Disciplines Series is a five-week course open to any faculty members who are pursuing a specific funding opportunity and would like support or who want to hone their skills developing a proposal. It will be taught by a WSU Office of Research Development Specialist, Lydia Baxter-Howard.

The course consists of five 1.5-hour sessions, including participant discussions, short lectures, take-home assignments, and in-class sharing and feedback on take-home assignments. Before the course, participants are expected to have selected a funding opportunity to target. If needed, participants may also attend a prerequisite session for finding funding, held February 3, 2026 from 9:30am – 11:00am.

Participants will be provided with grant-writing tools and copies of the lecture slides. Sessions will be presented virtually and in-person in the Pullman Office of Research conference room (Lighty 280) on Tuesdays, 9:30am – 11:00am, February 17, 2026 – March 24, 2026 (with a week off for WSU Spring Break).

  1. Project Goals (Specific Aims or Project Summary)
  2. Supplementary Documents
  3. Narrative
  4. Broader Impacts
  5. Peer Review

The following items are required in addition to your basic information:

  • A Cover Letter:
    • No longer than two pages.
    • Address your current research, scholarship, or creative practice.
    • Discuss goals for the future and how attending this workshop will assist meeting those goals.
  • A brief Letter of Support from your department chair, program director, or equivalent.
  • A two-page Curriculum Vitae or Biosketch.
  • A funding opportunity that you would like to target through this workshop.
    • If you don’t have anything in mind yet, you can work with an ORAP team member to explore funding opportunities that might be suitable for your work.

This training series is suitable for WSU faculty members in any track from any discipline and any WSU location.

Selected applicants will attend each session of the workshop at no cost to their home unit. If the registrant fails to fully participate in the workshop without prior arrangement, their home unit will be required to defray some or all of the cost of their participation.
