Focus areas will include animal models of disease, Native American studies, organic agriculture, and biomedical research.

Communicating Science

Effective Research Communication. Your research matters deeply to you! It matters to others, too, but only if effectively communicated. This brief workshop will introduce tips and techniques for communicating complex research ideas. We will focus on crafting a clear, compelling message, and developing a short presentation suitable for multiple audiences, including collaborators and funding agencies. We will also touch on graphic design and visual aid development.
About the presenter: Dr. Allison Coffin is an associate professor of neuroscience at WSU Vancouver and the co-founder and president of Science Talk, a science communication organization. She has 15 years of experience leading communication workshops throughout North America.
Incorporating Undergraduates in Research

Dr. Shelley Pressley, Director of Undergraduate Research, will share methods and best practices for incorporating undergraduates into in your research. Are you interested in working with undergraduates to advance your research and scholarly activities? This session will cover topics related to undergraduate research including how to effectively mentor students, efficiently manage their time (and yours), and where to find support for your students that are engaged in your research programs. Hear about models that faculty across the campus have used to grow their research, as well as provide hands-on opportunities for students.

Topic: Animal Models of Disease
This matchmaking session focuses on how researchers studying human disease can collaborate with the College of Veterinary Medicine to utilize either naturally-occurring disease models or induced animal models to advance their research.
The goal of this session is to foster valuable interdisciplinary partnerships, highlight faculty research, and inspire unique and innovative broader impacts across the university. Presenters and attendees will be inspired by the scope and diversity of research across WSU.

Topic: Native American Interests
WSU is holds a number of unique partnerships with Native American communities. This matchmaking session will explore some of the opportunities that exist for partnering with researchers already working with these tribes.

Working with Industry Expo

Come meet faculty who have successfully developed research programs with industrial collaborators. This interactive session will provide you the opportunity to get introduced to colleagues at WSU with an established track record of maintaining a research funding portfolio that includes industry dollars. You will be provided the chance to interact in an informal setting to learn directly from your peers on how to establish, develop and maintain a research funding relationship with a private sector partner.
Developing & Managing Large Projects

Lead faculty of large projects share their experience in building and managing large research programs. Panel members will share their success, road blocks, and lessons learned during the development of their prestigious research program. Advice will include how to become a high functioning project director, how to build and maintain an effective team, how to design and manage a successful large project, and how to build relationships with external partners & stakeholders.

Alternative Funding Sources: When Federal’s not Forthcoming

Faculty share their experiences – the unique paths they took to obtain research funding. With the changing climate for federal funding, diversifying your funding portfolio could provide stability to your research endeavors. Join us to hear a faculty panel of researchers who, in some way, faced a brick wall when pursuing traditional federal sources, but successfully and creatively navigated their own approach to funding their projects. They will share the challenges they faced and their ultimate successes with state, county, industry, association, and/or private foundation funding sources.

Successful academics share their stories and provide tips for navigating careers in academia. This panel consists of members who have reached the upper echelons of their research fields. Based on their personal experiences, the panelists will give advice on best strategies for planning your academic careers including setting long term goals, how to get the mentoring you need, development of leadership styles, project management of research programs, and more.
