The Office of Foundation Relations is soliciting internal concepts/preproposals for the 2021 W.M. Keck Foundation research grant program in two specific areas (1) medical research and (2) science and engineering. Keck only allows one Phase 1 application for each area. To ensure that we present the strongest and most well-aligned concepts to the Keck program officers, the Office of Research is running an internal competition to determine which project(s) will be put forward to Keck. For limited submission application requirements, see information below.
Please review the Programmatic Criteria carefully before investing time into developing a concept paper. The W.M. Keck Foundation’s Research Program supports high-risk/high-impact projects that are distinctive and novel in their approach and that question the prevailing paradigm. Supported projects will lead to breakthrough discoveries and/or develop new technologies that enable breakthrough discoveries for others. Keck is looking to fund projects that fall outside the mission of public funding agencies. The criteria can be found at: http://www.wmkeck.org/grant-programs/research.
Internal Decision Process: An internal review committee will evaluate how well the submitted internal projects fit the W.M. Keck Foundation’s criteria and funding patterns. These reviewers will include scientists, but they may not be in your field. We will do our best to find at least one reviewer who is close to each project’s area of science to represent proposal content during the internal review process. Guided by the reviewers’ feedback, the Vice President of Research will determine which of the recommended projects will be discussed with the Keck Foundation. Keck will meet with the VP for Research and the WSU Foundation Liaison to discuss up to three concept papers in each of the two funding areas. Based on feedback from the Keck program managers during our concept discussions, one project for each funding area will go forward to submit a Phase 1 Proposal to Keck. The WSU Foundation, Office of Foundation Relations, will work closely with the selected PI’s to develop a strong Phase 1 application.
Please do not submit pre-proposals for projects which have already been reviewed and denied by the W.M. Keck Foundation. If you have any questions, please contact Karin Neuenschwander, Office of Foundation Relations (email@example.com).
